Hi, I know it's been a while since I've been around here, but I am really hoping one of you guys will know what is going on here and/ or if it is a potential problem.

My brother's 1999 9-3 just started the following:

Essentially the car acts like the key is in the ignition even when the key is removed. The radio remains on, and the chime for when the key is still in the ignition and you open the door comes on with the door open and the key removed. The radio can be manually turned on and off, but without the key in place. Anybody have this issue previously? And, will it cause more issues (ie, dead battery)? Is there a simple remedy?

Thanks in advance guys!

This may be a troublesome ignition switch, easy to say, hard to access and test.

Maybe the ignition leads can be probed indirectly, at the fuse box....
Then, the Haynes may be helpful, the WIS (workshop info sys.) is the best route..

The radio's operation is controlled by the ICE(integrated central electronics).
It should play up to 45 minutes after the key is removed....
Check your manual for more accurate infomation...

Odd question, but is there any chance the lock is sticking "down"? Mine did it constently before the ignition switch died, still does it occasionally with the "new" (from ebay) one. If it is, wiggle the key while it's in the lock (or poke the lock a couple times) and see if the lock pop's up. Not a fix but at least it'll stop dinging.

Re: The radio staying on... it used to turn off when you pulled the key out. Thus, it's not normal as far as I can tell. It does appear to be, as you all seem to be pointing to... a sticky or troublesome ignition lock. I'll fidget with it some more, but thus far, all my wiggling and turn it back and forth has not produced any results. Haynes might have something... hopefully I will have time to take a trip to the library this weekend. On the plus side, the battery hasn't been drained yet. I appreciate the ideas... if you have any others let me know. I'll keep you posted.

Update:

A hair dryer and a can of WD-40 fixed it. there was something in there that popped back into position that had been stuck. Thanks guys for your ideas and help!
